Final Relay that secured Ursinus' win over Albright

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Ursinus College men's swimming team secured a second-place finish in the 200 yard freestyle relay as the Bears narrowly defeated Albright 103-102 Wednesday night.

The Bears led 99-91 going into the final event, as the team of junior Alexander Pandelidis (York, Pa./Dallastown Area), senior Scott Paine (York, Pa./Dallastown Area), sophomore Josef Gershun (Southbury, Conn./Fork Union) and sophomore Benjamin Jumper (Carlisle, Pa./Boiling Springs) finished with a 1:31.44, which was .44 seconds ahead of the third place team from Albright College. Albright scored 13 in the final relay, but, Ursinus gained four and won the meet to improve to 2-1 on the season.

Close finishes seemed to be the theme of the night as the Bears won three other events in races that were decided by hundreds of a second.

Paine picked up two top finishes on the night, winning the 1000 free at 10:15.06, and the 500 free at 4:55.88.

The team of sophomore Jacob Robinson (Columbia, Pa./Lancaster Catholic), senior Philip Quick (Bridgeton, N.J./Cumberland Regional), freshman Christopher Hoops (Phoenixville, Pa./Great Valley) and junior John Wieczorek (Milltown, N.J./St. Joseph) won the opening 200 medley relay at 1:40.32.

Robinson would win the 200 IM at 2:03.88 and take a second place finish in the 100 back at 55.20, with Hoops taking the 100 fly at 53.76. Quick added a top finish in the 100 breast at 1:02.51 and was third in the 200 IM at 2:08.69.

Gershun was third in the 1000 free at 10:32.56 and in the 500 free at 5:06.40, while Pandelidis was third in the 200 free at 1:50.59.  Wieczorek was third in the 50 free at 22.62 and third in the 100 free at 50.54

Freshman Alec Heckman (Wernersville, Pa./Conrad Weiser) was third in the 100 fly at 54.58.

Ursinus hosts McDaniel on Saturday.
