O'Malley Guides Bears Past Nittany Lions

Reading, PA- Ursinus College men's soccer (8-6-1) earned a 2-1 road victory against the Penn St. Berks Nittany Lions (3-12-1) on Wednesday night. The match took place at the Hintz Athletic Fields on a cool night in Berks County.

The first half featured offensive opportunities for both the Bears and the Nittany Lions. Each team was firing shots from the get-go, but it wasn't until later in the half that any shots on goal were taken. In the 37th minute Shane Gleason had an attempt for Penn St. Berks that was saved by Ursinus keeper Kyle Schantz. Then, in the 44th minute, Harry Lorenc had an opportunity for Ursinus that was saved by Jose Aparicio, the keeper for the Nittany Lions.

The first half ended still tied 0-0. Ursinus was leading Penn St. Berks 5-4 in total shots, but the teams were knotted 1-1 in shots on goal. Going into the second half, the Bears looked to find more offensive chances and break the ice on the scoreboard.

Just minutes after the break, Ursinus Freshman Alexander Woll was handed a tough yellow card. However, the Bears persevered in the 55th minute when fellow Freshman Jack Schmidt crossed a fantastic ball in front of the goal where Sophomore Tommy Mollis was able to find the back of the net to snatch a 1-0 lead for Ursinus.

Ursinus continued their offensive attack in the 66th minute, extending their lead to 2-0 on a goal from Senior Aidan O'Malley that stemmed from a defensive turnover on the part of Penn St. Berks.

In the 89th minute, the Nittany Lions got on the board thanks to a penalty kick from Owen VanDyke, but it proved to be too little too late as the Bears went on to win by a score of 2-1. Ursinus will play their final regular season game on Saturday at McDaniel.
