Bears Can’t Overcome Man Deficit in Loss Against F&M

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa.- Ursinus men's soccer (8-5-1) took a tough 1-0 loss to conference foe Franklin & Marshall (11-2-1) on Saturday at Patterson Field. It was Senior day, and after a beautiful ceremony the match kicked off under overcast skies in Montgomery County.

The Bears would have to face the Diplomats without the help of Junior Marco Grenda. He was leading the team in goals on the season (12) before missing this game.

Senior Aiden Cooper was handed two questionable yellow cards in the first 5 minutes of the contest, and the Bears found themselves having to face a man deficit for the remaining 85 minutes. Fellow Senior Mike Buck was also given a yellow card in the 24th minute, but the Bears persevered and were able to hold the Diplomats scoreless in the first half while trying to create chances of their own.

The score remained tied 0-0 at the break, and Ursinus goalkeeper Tyler Lewin tallied 3 saves in the first stanza to help the Bears stay in the match even though they were down a player. Franklin & Marshall led the bears 8-3 in shots and 3-0 in shots on goal at halftime.

The second half began with a Diplomat goal in the 49th minute that put them ahead 1-0. The chance originated when Carl Friedrich had a long throw-in to the box where A.J. Kopacz was waiting to place a header over Lewin's head.

Despite a fantastic show of heart and hustle from Ursinus and a valiant defensive effort, Franklin & Marshall was able to hold their lead and claim the 1-0 victory. The Bears did not tally any more shots in the contest, but Tyler Lewin did provide an impressive 7 saves to keep it close throughout.

Ursinus will see action next at Penn St.-Berks on Wednesday night.
