Men's Soccer Falls in OT

HAVERFORD, Pa. - Bidding for a second consecutive overtime victory, the Ursinus College men's soccer team came up just short as host Haverford netted a golden goal just past the midway point of the first extra session to walk off with a 1-0 victory in a tight Centennial Conference grinder.

The Bears (6-5, 2-3) were under fire from the start, with the Fords firing off five shots and ringing the crossbar in the 22nd minute. Thanks to three first-half saves from Tyler Lewin, Ursinus managed to get to intermission scoreless, and the field slowly began to flip from there.

Ursinus threatened consistently in the late stages, putting up six shots in the final 20 minutes and forcing three saves from the Haverford keeper. The Bears had a golden chance to nab a go-ahead goal with four minutes to go, when a long ball played in Marco Grenda all alone down the right side. With time to measure his shot, the CC's leading goal-scorer sent a low bouncer across the face of goal, but Dylan Ioffreda somehow managed to get a paw on it and redirect it just past the far post.

Still putting the Fords under pressure, Tommy Mollis' ensuing corner found the head of Grenda, whose shot hit the grass and nearly caused a scramble in front of goal before Ioffreda managed to secure it.

The teams went to overtime, and Haverford finally broke through when Matt Heim's cross was headed in by an on-rushing Andrew Stephens.

Ursinus held slim edges in shots (12-11) and corners (3-2) in an evenly matched affair that saw both keepers make four saves. Grenda paced the Bears with four shots and put two of them on frame.

The Bears break from conference play to host Scranton on Tuesday night.
