Big Second Half Sinks Men's Soccer

HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Ursinus College men's soccer team hung tough for a half at Haverford, but the two-time defending league champions poured it on after the break en route to a 4-0 Centennial Conference shutout.

Ursinus (2-11-1, 0-7) held the Fords off the board for more than 39 minutes and went into intermission down just 1-0 before the home side imposed its will.

The Fords (9-3-3, 4-2-1) nearly scored off a long throw-in in the 15th minute, as Michael Carr got a foot on a high-arcing toss from the right side. The ball trickled towards the right post, but Lillian managed to fall on it just before it crossed the line.

Ursinus was given a decent opportunity when a Ford defender was called for a shove in the back just outside the box. Junior Justin Molyneaux had a go, but his effort deflected off the Haverford wall and out for a corner.

That was the only shot of the afternoon for the Bears, but the home side had plenty of offense in store.

Haverford went ahead 1-0 just past the 39-minute mark on a header by Matthieu Maciejewski off a free kick by Ryan Sholes, who had two assists on the day.

Nick Janelli netted his 10th goal of the season just 2:22 after halftime, cutting to volley in a headed pass by Sykes Cargile. Haverford tacked on two more goals as the second stanza wore on.

The Fords outshot Ursinus, 19-1, and attempted six corners to two for the Bears.

Junior Brandon Lillian made five saves for Ursinus. Freshman Connor Howse made his first career start on the Bears' back line.

The men's soccer team closes out its home slate against first-place Johns Hopkins on Saturday.
