Men's Soccer Topped By Washington College

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Ursinus College men's soccer team fell to Centennial Conference foe Washington College on Saturday, 1-0.

The Shoremen (3-5, 1-1) got on the board first midway through the first half. Brian Graham took a throw and sent it from the sideline into the box, just out of the reach of Bears keeper Brandon Lillian. Washington College's Kyle Gaeffke – who was crashing the box – used his hip to redirect the ball into the back of the net.

Lillian exited the game following the score, with freshman keeper Matthew Kenwood taking over his position. Kenwood stopped the only shot he faced before the end of the first frame before stopping four more in the second half. His 68:07 minutes of playing time was a new career high to go with a career-best five saves.

It was a relatively quiet first 45 minutes, as both sides combined for just four shots on goal – including the score. For the Bears (2-5, 0-2), it was junior Ben Amaral and freshman Alexis Ayala who were able to put the ball on goal. Ayala's attempt came on a header off a throw from the sideline while Amaral's shot was a left-footed dribbler.

The Bears' best chance at potting the equalizer was thwarted by a Washington College defender seven minutes into the second half. Amaral slotted a pass into the box to the feet of Ayala, who touched the ball toward the far corner, but a defender who was getting back into position blocked it.

Ursinus was able to get off a total of nine shots in the match, just two reaching goal. The Shoremen defense refused to allow any penetration, keeping the ball out of the box for most of the game.

The Bears continue their CC homestand on Wednesday with a matchup against Swarthmore.
