Bears Stopped In Overtime by Shoremen

CHESTERTOWN, Md. - The Ursinus College men's soccer team saw defeat snatched from the jaws of victory at Washington College on Saturday afternoon, surrendering the tying goal in the final minute of regulation before the Shoremen tallied again in overtime to escape with a 3-2 victory in a Centennial Conference thriller.

Senior Ryan Molyneaux and sophomore Ben Amaral scored goals for Ursinus (4-8, 0-6), which came within a whisker of securing its first conference triumph in two years. Unfortunately, Washington College (7-5-1, 4-1-1) used a huge advantage in shots to overcome a sterling effort from Bears senior goalkeeper Vince Maiorino.

Maiorino made a career-high 13 saves, many of them of the spectacular variety and including nine in a first half in which the Bears seized a two-goal advantage despite an 11-4 deficit in shots.

The Bears scored on their first shot of the afternoon, a brilliant connection between the Molyneaux brothers. Justin's free kick from beyond midfield took a bounce and was headed into the back of the net by Ryan, his team-leading fourth goal of the season and his first on an assist from his younger brother, a sibling strike that lifted Ursinus into the driver's seat only 7:39 into the match.

Maiorino produced four big saves over the next six minutes, including stoning a pair of Shoremen shots in quick succession to prevent a quick reprisal by the hosts. Washington College put its first seven shots on frame in the first half, but the Bears' veteran netminder was equal to the task each time.

Maiorino's strong play paid off just after the half-hour, when sophomore Derek Rudy played a through ball for Amaral, whose shot was partially deflected by the Shoremen keeper before finding its way into the net for a 2-0 Bears lead. The assist was the first of Rudy's career.

The home side finally cracked the Ursinus back line less than two minutes later, with Griffin Bull halving the lead at 32:32. Sophomore Alex Sanger made a huge defensive play a couple minutes later, clearing a shot off the line to help Ursinus maintain its 2-1 lead.

Though they were outshot, 28-7, for the afternoon, the Bears took that edge into the 90th minute. But Kyle Gaeffke's rebound with 56 seconds showing on the clock evened the spread and forced an extra session. The Shoremen recorded the only four shots in overtime, eventually walking off a winner on a goal by Chris Lewandowski, who headed in a free kick for the golden goal.

Amaral had three of the seven shots for Ursinus, with Ryan Molyneaux adding two.

The Bears return home to take on Stockton in their final non-conference game of the season on Tuesday, October 18.
