Monarchs Top Men's Soccer in Double Overtime

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – Junior Kyle Woulfe and sophomore Derek Rudy combined on a picture-perfect equalizer in the second half of Wednesday night's game at King's (Pa.), but the Ursinus College men's soccer team was dealt a 2-1 defeat when the Monarchs scored less than a minute into the second overtime period.

Rudy's goal, the first of his career, pulled Ursinus (2-2) into a 1-1 tie in the 60th minute. The Bears had a couple of chances to win it in the first extra session, only for King's goalkeeper Owen Geedey to come up with a pair of huge saves, allowing the Monarchs (2-3) to walk off with a hard-fought win after Brendan Raab headed in a throw-in in the 101st minute.

The first half was largely played in the midfield, with the teams combining for only one shot before the Monarchs broke the ice in the 30th minute. Brian Fenster received a through pass to the edge of the 18-yard box and buried a powerful blast into the lower left corner of the goal for a 1-0 lead.

Senior goalkeeper Vince Maiorino made a nice diving stop of a dipping shot off the boot of Ryan Romeo in the 39th minute, and despite being held without a shot, the Bears went into intermission trailing by just one goal. King's managed just three shots in the first period.

Ursinus registered its first shot in the 49th minute, an effort by sophomore Ben Amaral that went wide. Minutes later, Maiorino made an incredible reflex save when he somehow was able to turn away Fenster at the doorstep after a loose ball landed directly at the Monarch's feet.

Another booming effort by Amaral sailed just high, but the Bears' pressure paid dividends immediately after. Woulfe's long cross from the left side was placed perfectly for Rudy to rise up and head the ball back across the goalmouth and into the left corner of the net for a perfectly executed equalizer at 59:18. The beautiful connection was a monumental one, the first career goal for Rudy and the first assist for Woulfe, who scored his first collegiate only two games earlier.

The Bears dodged a bullet late in regulation, Steven Valencia's direct free kick from 20 yards out rising just over the bar in the 84th minute, and the teams went into extra time to decide matters.

Woulfe came close to a golden goal 2:26 into overtime, but his hard, bouncing effort from straight on was snagged by a diving Geedey, who also came up big in the final minute of the first extra session. Ursinus senior captain Ryan Molyneaux's powerful free kick looked destined for the left corner of the goal, but Geedey was able to palm it out for a corner.

King's ended it 53 seconds into double overtime, when Raab scored on a header off a throw-in from Romeo.

The Monarchs outshot the Bears, 12-9, and held a 4-1 edge in corners. Geedey made three saves – two of them in overtime – to earn the win, while Maiorino finished with two stops.

The men's soccer team returns home to welcome Gettysburg for the Centennial Conference opener at noon on Saturday, September 17.
