Men's Lacrosse Shakes Off Slow Start to Ground Eagles

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The Ursinus College men's lacrosse team made a spectacular recovery from a rough first quarter and a half, turning the tables on fast-starting Mary Washington and dominating the rest of the way to a 13-9 non-conference victory in its road opener.

Freshman attack Bobby McClure was the catalyst of the Bears' resurgence, ringing up four goals and an assist, while junior Gerard Brown climbed up the all-time charts with three assists – all in a span of two minutes in the third quarter – in addition to a goal. Eight other players found the scoring column and sophomore Nick Kirk stood tall with 14 saves in his first career start for Ursinus (2-0), which trailed 4-0 midway through the second quarter before scoring seven straight goals as part of a 10-1 spurt bridging intermission.

Mary Washington (1-3) pounced on the 18th-ranked Bears with three goals in the first seven minutes, all of them thanks to Mike Marson. The senior opened the scoring less than three minutes in, set up teammate Andrew Carlson for another, and tacked on his second score 37 seconds later to stake the Eagles to a 3-0 lead at the 8:20 mark.

The home side stretched the advantage to four on a tally by Miles Davis early in the second before the Bears found their footing with a rally sparked by a pair of freshmen attacks. Ursinus finally got on the board at the 6:59 mark of the stanza, when McClure finished off a feed from senior Conor Fitzgerald. A few minutes later, Joe Donnelly marked the first goal of his career, and McClure tacked on another to get Ursinus within 4-3 with 2:34 to go before the half.

After a penalty on the Eagles, junior Ian Desenberg cashed in on the ensuing extra-man opportunity pumping in the tying goal on an assist from McClure at 1:19. After a fourth consecutive face-off win by sophomore Brian Casey, sophomore Sam Isola gave the Bears their first lead with 33 seconds remaining in the first half. Isola's strike capped a run of five unanswered markers over the final seven minutes of the half.

The Bears' streak continued out of the break, with junior Lou Harrison finding the back of the net to make it 6-4 just over two minutes into the third period. After staving off a 30-second penalty with the help of a caused turnover by freshman Noah Frantz, McClure went back to work on the other end, completing his first hat trick on a dish from Brown.

Marson's goal eight seconds later, at the 5:32 mark, snapped a drought of more than 21 minutes and a 7-0 Ursinus run. The bleeding didn't stop for long, though, as Sachs converted a pass from Brown at 3:47, nine seconds before Brown set up junior Tim Miller's marker that made it 9-5 in favor of the Bears and gave Brown three assists in a two-minute stretch. McClure's fourth of the night came with 15 seconds remaining in the quarter as Ursinus doubled up the Eagles, 10-5, heading into the final 15 minutes.

Eli Ayer scored right off the opening faceoff in the fourth, but senior Corey Kelly had a response ready, beating Sam Wasson for just the second goal of his career to supply an 11-6 lead with 14:19 to go. Just over a minute later, Brown scored his first of the game, with the assist to senior Matthew Cioeta.

Freshman Reagan Ketchum scored his first career goal with 9:10 on the timer, and the Eagles added two more goals to cap the scoring.

Brown, who also scooped up a game-high nine ground balls, moved into third in school history with his 60th assist, and his 88 points are tied for 10th all-time.

The Bears have scored at least ten goals in each of their first two games for the first time since 2012.

Ursinus heads to Albright for a non-conference contest on Saturday, March 4.
