Men's Lacrosse stays alive in CC race with win over McDaniel

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Trailing 5-3 with 11:20 left in the third quarter Ursinus outscored McDaniel 9-1 over the final 19:40 as the Bears (7-6, 3-3 Centennial) kept their Centennial Conference playoff hopes alive with a 12-6 win over McDaniel (6-8, 3-4 Centennial) on Saturday afternoon at Patterson Field.

Mark Stratton scored three goals and added an assist, while Steve Smyrl went for two goals as did Mike Neal and Logan Panaccione.

Ursinus held McDaniel to just ten shots in the second half, outshooting the Green Terror 45-27 in the game.

After McDaniel's Patrick Serio, who finished with two goals and an assist, scored with 11:20 left in the third, Ursinus began the barrage of goals starting with Panaccione's goal at 10:16 left on an assist from Steve Mussoline to get within one at 5-4.

Smyrl would tie the score at 5-all with 3:05 left in the third.

Mussoline would get the Bears into the lead for good with his goal at 14:16 left in the fourth on an assist from Smryl. Stratton would then score back-to-back goals, at 14:03 and 13:06, to put Ursinus up 8-5.

Another goal from Panaccione, with 10:40 left in the game, gave Ursinus a 9-5 lead, which was followed by a goal from Neal at 9:42 left for a 10-5 lead.

McDaniel's Sean Brett, who finished with a team high three goals, stopped the bleeding with a goal at 9:15. However, goals from Smyrl and Stratton put Ursinus up 12-6.

Individually, Shawn Caven was 10-of-19 at the dot with six groundballs, while Anthony Torello had four groundballs. Brian Neff made 14 saves in 57 minutes of action, while senior Jimmy Valentine made save in the final three minutes.

Ursinus, who is one game back of both Gettysburg and Dickinson for the fourth spot with one week remaining, goes to Haverford on Wednesday.
