Men's Lacrosse falls to Montclair, 18-11

MONTCLAIR, N.J. – Nationally-ranked Montclair State closed the game on a 6-0 run as the Red Hawks (5-0) defeated Ursinus (2-2) 18-11 Wednesday night in men's lacrosse play. The Bears, who are receiving votes in this week's poll, had rallied from a three goal deficit in the third quarter to get within one before 14th-ranked Montclair scored six straight to seal the win.

Ursinus got three goals and an assist from sophomore attack Logan Panaccione and two goals and two assists from junior attack Mike Neal. Junior midfielder Jake Weber also tossed in two assists on the afternoon.

Montclair was led by four goals from Brett Mangan.

After yielding the first goal of the game, Ursinus scored three straight goals to take a 3-1 lead in the first quarter, when junior attack Mark Stratton scored a man-up goal on an assist from senior midfielder Dylan Spangenberg with 6:17 left. 

Starting the second quarter tied at 3, sophomore attack Steve Mussoline scored a goal 53 seconds in on an assist from Panaccione for a  4-3 lead. Ursinus last held the lead at 5-4 when sophomore long stick midfielder Patrick O'Donoghue scored unassisted at 10:32. Montclair would score the next three goals, capped by a tally from Ryan Totin at 5:15 for a  7-5 lead. 

Ursinus would get to within one goal three times the rest of the way but could not tie the score.

Individually, freshman defender Zach Jones picked up five ground balls, with sophomore goalkeeper Brian Neff, junior defender Cody Lefevre each getting four. Jones and sophomore long stick midfielder Anthony Torello each had two caused turnovers. 

Sophomore midfielder James Fairchild was 13-for-22 on faceoffs, while senior Shawn Caven was 4-for-8. 

Neff finished with eight saves, with freshman goalkeeper Joe Volavka getting one save in two minutes of action in the fourth quarter.

Ursinus hosts Wheaton (Mass.) on Saturday.
