MLax falls at Eastern, 10-9

ST. DAVIDS, Pa. – Eastern University built a 5-2 rally as the Eagles (6-2) defeated Ursinus (5-5) 10-9 Saturday afternoon in non-conference men's lacrosse play.

The Bears held a 2-1 lead midway through the first quarter, then almost rallied from a 9-5 deficit with three goals in the final quarter. Ursinus got to within 10-9 with 28 seconds, got the ball, but got two shots off which did not find the back of the goal.

For Ursinus, freshman attack Steve Smyrl (Glen Mills, Pa./Garnet Valley) had four goals and an assist, with freshman midfielder Jake Weber (Lititz, Pa./Manheim Township) scoring two goals. Freshman attack Mark Stratton (Lititz, Pa./Manheim Township) added in two assists.

Eastern was led by Matt Wagner with four goals, with Will Johnson adding in two goals and two assists.

Sophomore Shawn Caven (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) had seven ground balls, as he went 8-for-12 on faceoffs in the game. Freshman attack Mike Neal (Shelby Township, Mich./De La Salle) and senior midfielder Jeff Ocampo (Palm Coast, Fla./Mantanzas) each had three ground balls for Ursinus, with sophomore Nile Thompson (Merion Station, Pa./Lower Merion) and senior midfielder Mike Alfieri (Mount Laurel, N.J./Lenape) each causing two turnovers.

In goal, senior Matt Columbini (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson) played the first half and made three saves, with sophomore Jimmy Valentine (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) playing the final 30 minutes, making six stops.

Ursinus will have the week off, before heading to nationally-ranked Gettysburg next Saturday.
