"Saves" The Night

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Ursinus College senior attack Dave Kraus scored six goals and had an assist on Tuesday night at Ursinus (4-1) defeated Plattsburgh State (3-1) 9-6 in a defensive affair at Patterson Field in men's lacrosse play.

Kraus scored three of his goals in the first half of play as the Bears improved to 3-0 at home this season.

Freshman attack Mark Stratton (Lititz, Pa./Manheim Township) scored a goal and added in two assists, while sophomore midfielder Dylan Spangenberg (Downingtown, Pa./Malvern Prep) had two assists of his own.

The Cardinals were led by two goals from junior attack Tommy Kilderry, as Plattsburgh rallied from a 4-0 hole to knot the game at 4-all with 13:31 left in third quarter.

The main story was not the goals that went in, but, the ones that didn't as junior goalkeeper T.J. Magnani (Bear, Del./St. Mark's) made 22 saves coming two shy of the school record of 24. Magnani was brilliant as he faced 47 shots on the evening. He also scooped up six ground balls, along sophomore midfielder Shawn Caven (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury). Caven was 10-for-18 on faceoffs in the game.

Defensively, freshman defender Ryan Ridinger (Lititz, Pa./Manheim Township) made four caused turnovers, while Stratton and junior defender Buddy Ferro (Clifton Heights, Pa./Episcopal Academy) had three each.

Kraus scored Ursinus' first three goals, he last coming with 11:43 left in the second for a 3-0 lead, then assisted on Stratton's man-up goal with 9:34 left for a 4-0 lead. Kilderry then scored back-to-back goals for Plattsburgh, his last coming with 5:59 left to cut the Ursinus lead to two at 4-2.

Sophomore midfielder Nick Travers scored a goal off of an Ursinus turnover with nine seconds remaining until halftime for a 4-3 Ursinus lead.

After the score was tied, Ursinus scored the next three to take a 7-4 lead as Kraus scored all three goals, his last coming with 14:49 left in the game.

Ursinus will begin Centennial Conference play on Saturday, hosting Swarthmore.
