COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Ursinus freshman attack Mark Stratton (Lititz, Pa./Manheim Township) scored five goals and added in an assist as the Bears (1-0) opened up the 2012 season with a 14-8 win over Widener (0-2) Wednesday night.
Stratton's five-goal attack propelled Ursinus to its third-straight season opening win.
Freshman midfielder Jake Weber (Lititz, Pa./Manheim Township), senior Dave Kraus (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand) and sophomore midfielder Dylan Spangenberg (Downingtown, Pa./Malvern Prep) all had two goals in the win.
Widener was led by four goals from senior midfielder Ryan Shewell.
Leading 5-4 at the half, Ursinus outscored the Pride by a 9-3 mark in the second half including a 5-2 advantage in the fourth. Ursinus also picked up 42 ground balls and won 19 of the 26 faceoffs.
Individually, sophomore faceoff specialist Shawn Caven (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) had a game-high 11 ground balls and went 16-for-21 from the X on faceoffs.
In goal, junior T.J. Magnani (Bear, Del./St. Mark's) had eight saves in the win.
Ursinus embarks on a two-game road trip Saturday, taking on Messiah before heading to top-ranked Salisbury next Wednesday.
