Men's Lacrosse suffers first loss of 2010, 8-7, to McDaniel

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – McDaniel sophomore attack DJ Rickels scored the game-winning goal with just 38 seconds left as the Green Terror (4-4, 1-1 Centennial) handed Ursinus (7-1, 3-1 Centennial) its first loss of the season in an 8-7 men’s lacrosse matchup Saturday afternoon.

Ursinus, playing in its fourth straight one goal game, had two shots to tie it at the end of the game but both shots went wide.

Ursinus had fought back to tie the score three times, including a goal from sophomore midfielder Jeff Ocampo (Palm Coast, Fla./Mantanzas) with 9:46 left in the fourth period to make the score 7-all.

For the Bears, junior midfielder Pat Gillen (Merrick, N.Y./Calhoun) had two goals, while senior midfielder Tom Walsh (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown West) had three assists.

Rickels last goal of the game was his fourth of the contest, while junior midfielder Jed Barnes had two goals on the afternoon.

Ursinus held a 4-2 lead after one quarter of play, courtesy of two goals in the final 3:03. The first goal came from senior midfielder Eric Farris (Pottsgrove, Pa./Pottsgrove) off a senior attack Dan Monzo (Collegeville, Pa./Spring-Ford) assist at 3:03 to give Ursinus a 3-2 lead, followed by a goal from Gillen off of a Walsh assist at 2:21.

McDaniel responded with three straight goals, including an extra-man goal from Rickels with 8:16 left to put the Green Terror up 5-4. Ursinus tied the score at 5-all with seven minutes left on a goal by sophomore attack David Kraus (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand) off of a Walsh assist. McDaniel took a 6-5 lead at intermission as sophomore attack JS Duke scored on a senior attack Gibbs Preston assist with 27 seconds left.

For Ursinus, sophomore midfielder Mike Bloom (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) was 5-for-7 on faceoffs, while senior defender Jake West (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern) picked up for groundballs. Freshman goalkeeper T. J. Magnani (Bear, Del./Saint Mark’s) made nine saves in the loss.

For McDaniel, Rickels had five groundballs. Sophomore goalkeeper Brad Motley made five saves in the second half to get the win, as he played the final 30 minutes in relief of sophomore goalkeeper Ty Wittlesberger.

Ursinus will host Moravian on Thursday night.
