Men's Lacrosse defeats Washington, 9-8

CHESTERTOWN, Md. – Ursinus men’s lacrosse sophomore midfielder Jeff Ocampo (Palm Coast, Fla./Mantanzas) and sophomore attack David Kraus (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand) each had three goals as the Bears (7-0, 3-0 Centennial) defeated Washington (Md.) (3-4, 1-2 Centennial) 9-8 in another see-saw affair on Wednesday night.

The win kept Ursinus’ seven game win streak going and the Bears find themselves tied with top-ranked Gettysburg atop the Centennial Conference.

Kraus, the reigning Centennial Conference Offensive Player of the Week, scored the eventual game-winner with 5:24 left in the fourth off of an assist from sophomore midfielder Mike Bloom (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip). That goal came just five seconds after Ocampo had scored unassisted to tie the score at 8-all.

Washington’s Doug Herdegen, who finished with a team-high three goals as well, scored with 3:54 left in the fourth to put the Shoremen within one at 9-8.

The Shoremen had two shots in the final 18 seconds, but, both were saved by Bears freshman goalkeeper T.J. Magnani (Bear, Del./Saint Mark’s). Magnani finished with nine saves, seven of which came in the final quarter.

Kraus’ final goal of game was the only time a team enjoyed a two-goal advantage as each team was tied at the end of a quarter.

Ursinus trailed just once, at 2-1 with 13:55 left in the second quarter as Patrick Coyle scored unassisted.

Bloom finished with a team-high eight groundballs, while going 10-for-16 on faceoffs. Junior defender Logan Duffie (Glen Mills, Pa./Penncrest), freshman defender Buddy Ferro (Clifton Heights, Pa./Episcopal Academy) and senior defender Jake West (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern) had three caused turnovers each.

Ursinus will host McDaniel on Saturday.
