Mules Spoil Men's Basketball Senior Day

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Ursinus College men's basketball team got big games from a veteran and a rookie on Senior Day, but a career-high 30 points from Brandon LaRose pushed visiting Muhlenberg to an 81-72 Centennial Conference verdict this afternoon.

Senior guard Malik Draper finished with 17 points, five rebounds, and five assists after being honored alongside classmate Mark Wonderling in a pregame ceremony. Wonderling had eight points, ten rebounds, three assists, and a pair of steals in his final collegiate home game.

Freshman swingman Matt Williams made five 3-pointers to match Draper with 17 points for Ursinus (11-13, 7-10), which led 64-60 with 7:29 to play before Muhlenberg (11-13, 8-10) took control for good with a 9-0 run over the next four-plus minutes.

Two free throws by LaRose halved the deficit, and Jon Schreer's left-wing triple at the 4:53 mark gave the Mules a lead they would never relinquish. John Hunter scored four straight points to cap the spurt and put the visitors up, 69-64, with just over three minutes showing on the clock. Draper's banked-in runner cut it to three, but LaRose reeled off nine straight Mule points over the next four possessions to stymie the Bears' comeback efforts.

Nick Rindock recorded a double-double with 13 points and ten boards for Muhlenberg, while Hunter added 12 points of his own. LaRose finished 10 of 14 from the field and 9 of 10 at the line in a dominant offensive performance.

Draper was 7 of 18 from the floor and made all three of his free throws, but Ursinus shot just 35.6 percent (26 of 73) and 9 of 34 (26.5 percent) from beyond the arc. Sophomore forward Joseph LoStracco collected eight points and ten rebounds, contributing to a 42-36 edge on the glass.

The Bears close out the 2015-16 campaign on Monday, February 22 at Gettysburg.
