Wild finish sinks Men's Basketball in loss to Swarthmore, 74-71

SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Host Swarthmore rallied from seven down in the final 1:19 against Ursinus, as the Garnet (4-4, 1-2 Centennial) stunned the Bears (2-4, 1-2 Centennial) in a 74-71 loss for Ursinus on Saturday afternoon at Tarble Pavilion.

The Garnet got a game-high 24 points off of the bench from Jay Kober, who sank five three-pointers in the win.

With Ursinus holding a 69-62 lead with 1:19 left, Kober's three pointer with 1:12 left put the Garnet to within four at 69-65. With 1:05 left, Ursinus sophomore forward Jon Ward (Allentown, Pa./Parkland) made 1-of-2 foul shots to give Ursinus a five-point edge at 70-65.

Swarthmore pulled back to within three at 70-67 following a layup by Jordan Federer with 52 seconds left. Following an Ursinus turnover on their next possession, Kober sank a layup with 30 seconds left to get within one at 70-69. The Garnet fouled, but, sophomore forward Kevin Janowski (New Egypt, N.J./New Egypt) made 1-of-2 to give the Bears a two-point advantage at 71-69 with 19 seconds left. The Bears went to the line 41 times in the game, making 28 for a percentage of 68.3.

Ryan Carmichael's three-pointer with nine seconds left gave the Garnet the lead for good at 72-71. Ursinus drove down and was unable to score on its offensive possession with two seconds left, giving the Garnet the ball back. Two foul shots from Will Gates gave the Garnet a three-point margin.

Despite the loss, senior guard Matt Hilton (Lewistown, Pa./Lewistown Area) scored his 1,000th career point at Ursinus with a jumper with 12:15 left in the game. The Bears put four players in double figures in the loss, with Ward picking up 17 points, followed by 15 from Janowski and 14 from sophomore guard Matt Donahue (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Trinity).

Freshman point guard Jesse Krasna (Fairless Hills, Pa./Pennsbury) picked up his first collegiate double-double, scoring ten points and grabbing ten rebounds. His ten boards were apart of a commanding 47-33 rebounding edge for the Bears. However, Swarthmore made just eight turnovers in the win, despite shooting just 21.6 percent (8-for-37) from the field in the first half.

Ursinus takes on Haverford Wednesday night at Helfferich Hall.
