HAVERFORD, Pa. - Haverford freshman guard Cameron Baker had
a game-high 24 points as the Fords (9-12, 7-8 Centennial) stayed
alive in the Centennial Conference playoff race with a 78-69 win
over Ursinus (13-9, 9-6 Centennial) Thursday night in men's
basketball play.
Sophomore guard Ian Goldberg added in 20 points for the Fords.
For Ursinus, freshman forward Jon Ward (Allentown,
Pa./Parkland) scored a team-high 23 points, while junior
guard Matt Hilton (Lewistown, Pa./Lewistown Area)
scored 14.
Senior guard Keith Page (Manchester, England/Blair
Academy) scored 11 points for Ursinus, who was
outrebounded 38-28 by Haverford, including a 13-4 margin on the
offensive glass. The Fords benefited from 11 second-chance points
and 19 points off of turnovers.
Trailing by one at halftime, Haverford scored the first four points
of the second half to go up 37-34 with 19:12 left. Ursinus would
answer back and take its last lead of the game at 38-37 with 18:09
on a layup by Ward.
Haverford took the lead for good at 40-38 on a three-pointer by
Goldberg with 17:29 left. The Bears would get to within one two
more times, and trail by two five times over the next seven
minutes.
The Fords landed a knockout punch with Baker connected on a
three-pointer with 5:45 left to go up six at 62-56.
Despite the loss, Ursinus still remains tied with Gettysburg for
the third spot as the Bullets lost to F&M, while Ursinus is
also one back of Muhlenberg who dropped a game to Dickinson.
However, Washington is now a half-game back of the Bears with four
games remaining.
Ursinus hosts McDaniel on Saturday.
