Bears Cruise Past Bullets 8-2 On Senior Day

Collegeville, Pa. -  The Ursinus field hockey team celebrated Senior Day and Homecoming with a Centennial Conference victory over the Gettysburg Bullets 8-2.

Six different players got on the scoresheet as the 14th-ranked Bears finished Centennial Conference play with an 8-2 record. Ursinus will head into the conference tournament ranked as the No.2 seed after winning four consecutive matches to finish the season.

The Bears jumped out to an early lead after Ellie Bruggeman broke away from the defense and her shot got past Eilene Besselman of the Bullets. Gettysburg answered back with a goal of their own to even the score at 1-1. Two minutes later, Amanda Groeling found the back of the net off an assist from Madison Handwerger, as the Bears took the lead 2-1. An unassisted goal from Jordan Moore would make the score 3-1 Bears heading into the break.

After both teams scored to start the third, Jordan Moore and Amanda Groeling would add to the Bears lead with their second goals of the day. The Bears led 6-2 with ten minutes remaining, as Jamie Mayer joined the scoresheet with her third goal of the season. As time expired, one last penalty corner gave freshman Maeve Montgomery her first career goal with a laser past the Bullets defense.

Ursinus totaled 17 shots on the afternoon and had an advantage in penalty corner opportunities 13-3. Makayla Baessler picked up the win in goal for the Bears collecting five saves in the contest.

The Bears will look to carry on the momentum as they head into Conference tournament play.
