Field Hockey Slips Past Shorewomen

Field Hockey Slips Past Shorewomen

CHESTERTOWN, Md. - The No. 10 Ursinus College field hockey team rallied from two different deficits and fended off a feisty Washington College squad for a 3-2 Centennial Conference victory on Saturday.

The Bears (7-2, 2-0), coming off three straight wins over top-10 foes, had to grind out a win after a long ride to Chestertown. In a game in which all of the scoring took place in the first half, a go-ahead goal by Devon Carroll with the clock at zeroes for an untimed penalty corner proved to be the difference as Ursinus stretched its winning streak to four.

Despite racking up a 14-3 advantage in shots in the first half and piling up 17 penalty corners for the day, the Bears found themselves in an unlikely hole when Julianna Sterling scored just over a minute in to stake the Shorewomen (5-4, 1-1) to a shock lead.

The Bears found their footing and evened the score when Carroll found Jamie Mayer for the visitors' first goal, but Washington College again nosed in front as Madison Parker scored early in the second quarter. Mary Lauren Franz equalized on an assist from Jordan Moore with 6:40 remaining in the first half, and the Bears' heavy advantage in corners finally paid off.

With the first-half time nearly elapsed, Ursinus earned a corner in the closing seconds and cashed in on as Carroll plugged the back of the cage to send the visitors into the break with the lead.

Although the Shorewomen threatened in the second half, outshooting Ursinus by a 5-2 margin after intermission, Jordan Ulsh held firm with four saves and the Bears toughed out the remaining time to escape with a narrow victory.

With a likely elevated national ranking in hand, the Bears are back on Snell Field to host Muhlenberg in Wednesday's Pink Game.
