Hornets Sting Field Hockey in OT Thriller

LYNCHBURG, Va. - The No. 13 Ursinus College field hockey team came up just short in a 4-3 overtime thriller against No. 19 Lynchburg on the campus of Liberty University on Friday night.

Makayla Baessler came up with four clutch saves to fend off an offensive deluge by the Hornets in the extra session, but Jackie Lerro finally got one past her with 3:47 remaining to end the Bears' three-game winning streak.

The Hornets controlled the majority of first-half play, but were forced to settle for a 2-2 stalemate at the break as the opportunistic Bears (3-2) scored on their only two shot attempts of the first half. Trailing 1-0, Ursinus turned the tables when Laura Rothschild and Jordan Moore found the back of the cage about four minutes apart to take a 2-1 lead with 4:48 left in the second quarter. Between those goals, Erin McIlhenny prevented a Lynchburg goal with her ninth career defensive save.

The Hornets (2-3) evened the score just 34 seconds after Moore's go-ahead tally, sending the teams into intermission all square.

Ursinus found its footing after a first half played mostly on its heels. Lynchburg went back in front, 3-2, only for Mary Lauren Franz to tally the equalizer just past the midway point of the fourth quarter on an assist from Jamie Mayer

The Bears dominated the final frame, peppering the Hornets' cage with 10 shots and forcing Lynchburg goalie Kayla Brady into seven saves. Six of those came between the Hornets' go-ahead goal and Howell's, with Ellie Bruggeman accounting for four of them herself. Bruggeman put another shot on cage with just under four minutes to go, but Brady was able to parry it away and the teams went into overtime.

Lynchburg turned the tables in the extra session, sending salvo after salvo at Baessler until the hosts broke through with the game-winner. The rookie registered eight saves in her first career start.
