Field Hockey Upset By Gettysburg in 2OT

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – The Ursinius College field hockey team fell to Gettysburg, 2-1, on Saturday in a Centennial Conference battle that required a pair of overtimes.

The Bears, ranked No. 15 in Division III, suffered their first loss against a CC opponent other than Franklin & Marshall since a 3-2 setback to Muhlenberg in 2013. It was the first overtime affair between Ursinus and Gettysburg since 1982.

Ursinus (4-4, 2-1) got on the board first, thanks to a goal from senior Brooke Overly. The marker gave her a share of the team lead with sophomore Gemma Dufoe, as they each have four. Overly's score came on a pass from sophomore Abbie Roberts – who sent the ball in from the left – that sprung her for a breakaway. The assist was the first of Roberts' career.

Ursinus failed to capitalize on a great opportunity when the Bullets were handed a pair of green cards in the span of 30 seconds. Following the two cards, the Bears were only able to get off a pair of shots from Dufoe and junior Mikayla Jordan before the halftime whistle blew, sending the Bears to the break with a 1-0 lead on the Bullets (3-4, 2-1).

Dufoe nearly put the Bears ahead by two when she ripped a shot at Gettysburg keeper Haley Mowery just three and a half minutes into the second half. Mowery was able to make the shot, which led to the Bullets' game-tying score.

Less than two minutes later, Gettysburg's Grace Torrance earned a penalty stroke, which she converted on for her first goal of the season, and more importantly, to tie the game.

Following the equalizer, the Bears' offense started to create some steam. Roberts sent in a shot several minutes later, missing the net to the left. Freshman Gabriela Howell fired a shot that was saved. And what may have been the Bears' best chance to go ahead - a penalty stroke by junior Bridget Sherry that Mowery stopped with a dive to her right.

Still hanging on, the Bullets came up with two defensive saves in the first overtime session, the first on a blast by sophomore Erin Saybolt that was destined for the back of the cage before Grace Torrance batted it out of the air and out of harm's way. Lily Neibart kept an Overly shot out of the net with 1:28 to go in the first extra period.

Having survived a litany of close calls, Gettysburg got the game-winner in the second overtime off the stick of Allison Cavicchio with 2:55 left on the clock.

The Bears peppered the Bullets net with shots throughout the game, but with little luck. They outshot Gettysburg, 25-9, in the contest and had more scoring chances, winning the penalty corner battle by an 18-3 count. Mowery made 12 saves, while Ursinus junior keeper Jules Singer made five. Overly led the team with six shots on goal while Saybolt chipped in three of her own.

Ursinus looks to rebound next Saturday as it travels to CC foe Dickinson.
