Field Hockey Trio Collects NFHCA All-Region Status

CHANDLER, Ariz. – Seniors Amber Steigerwalt and Aliki Torrence and sophomore Bridget Sherry earned inclusion on the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) All-South Region Team, it was announced Monday. Steigerwalt and Torrence were named to the first team, while Sherry landed on the second team.

A two-time first team All-CC honoree, Steigerwalt is a first team all-region selection for the second straight year after leading the Bears in goals (16) and points (37) in 2016. Steigerwalt, who tied for third in the Centennial Conference in both categories, finished her prolific career tied for fifth in goals (57) and sixth in points (140) in the program's storied history. The forward and team co-captain was a first team NFHCA All-American as a junior. Steigerwalt started every game for the last three seasons and made 81 starts in her career.

A four-time All-CC performer, Torrence made it four consecutive all-region laurels with her third straight spot on the first team. A two-time All-American, she was the backbone of a defense that allowed only 24 goals in 22 games and even emerged as a dangerous weapon on attack with four goals and four assists. Torrence added a defensive save to finish her career with nine. She started all but one of 86 career games, including every contest for the last three years.

Also a second team All-CC choice, Sherry is a second-team all-region honoree for the second straight season. A standout back, she contributed four goals – all on penalty strokes – and an assist to the Bears' offense, starting every game. In the Centennial Conference championship game, Sherry scored the game-winning stroke in overtime against Franklin & Marshall to lift Ursinus to its 12th league title in the last 13 seasons, and the fourth in as many years.

Ursinus finished the 2016 campaign with an overall record of 17-5, won its fourth straight CC championship, and reached the NCAA quarterfinals.
