Field Hockey Blanks Catholic

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Four different players entered the scoring column as the Ursinus College field hockey team rolled past visiting Catholic, 4-0, on Tuesday night at Snell Field. The Bears posted their sixth shutout of the season and stretched their winning streak to three with a monumental clash against Muhlenberg looming on Saturday.

Ursinus (13-4) got goals from all four classes, with senior Ann Kopera, junior Brooke Overly, sophomore Bridget Sherry, and freshman Erin Saybolt all plugging the back of the cage in an impressive non-conference rout of Catholic (9-6), which spent two weeks ranked within the top 20 in Division III earlier this year. Kopera chipped in an assist and sophomore Jules Singer and the defense stood tall again for the 7th-ranked Bears, who will host Muhlenberg Saturday with the Centennial Conference regular-season crown on the line. If Ursinus defeats the 12th-ranked Mules by more than one goal, it will host the CC championship tournament.

Ursinus had two early shots saved, but its best chance to break the ice came at 13:42, when the Bears latched onto an errant pass near midfield. Senior Rachel Zane sent a perfectly placed long pass up the field for Overly, who was in behind the defense. Overly tried to maneuver around on-rushing Catholic goalie Analisa Scott, but her last touch was a tad too heavy and her diving shot attempt snuck just wide of the left post.

Controlling play for much of the half, the Bears were rewarded with the lead with 11:51 to play in the first half, as Saybolt's shot from a tough angle at the left post deflected off a Cardinals defender and into the back of the cage for her second career goal and second in three outings.

Kopera doubled the margin late in the first half, tapping in a rebound off a shot by freshman Gemma Dufoe that had deflected into the air following a penalty corner.

Sherry quickly extended the lead to 3-0 in the second half, netting her third goal of the season, all of which have come on penalty strokes. Scott got her body in front of Sherry's high shot to the left, but the ball deflected off her and over the line at the 39:19 mark. Sherry's stroke marked the third straight game in which Ursinus has scored within the first seven minutes of the second stanza.

Armed with a big lead, the Bears' stingy back line did the rest. Catholic managed only five shots for the night, though Singer was called into action several times in the second half. She made a quick reflex save in the 55th minute, gloving away a powerful blast by Madison Andrews that was ticketed for the top right corner of the cage, then stepped in front of a shot by Rachel Day just a few seconds later. Singer dove to her right to deflect a shot by Kerri Shallow harmlessly out of play about three minutes later.

Overly closed the scoring with exactly five minutes remaining, deftly back-handing a feed from Kopera past Scott for her 11th goal of the season.

Ursinus owned a 16-5 advantage in shots and an 8-3 spread in penalty corners. Steigerwalt led the Bears with six shots, Overly adding four.

Singer finished with four saves – all in the second half – to collect her fourth solo shutout of the season. Scott made five saves for Catholic, and Kelly Cousoulis came up with a defensive save early in the second period.

The field hockey team will honor its five seniors in a pregame ceremony prior to taking on Muhlenberg at noon on Saturday.
