Homecoming Hooray for Field Hockey

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Ursinus College field hockey started Homecoming 2016 off with a bang, defeating Dickinson in Centennial Conference play on Saturday. Four different Bears found the cage as Ursinus rocked the Red Devils 5-1.

Brooke Overly and Amber Steigerwalt proved to be the stars of the game, having a hand in all five goals for Ursinus. Overly assisted on two scores and added two goals of her own to reach double-digits on the season. Steigerwalt notched a score and handed out three assists in the win for a five-point afternoon.

Steigerwalt found Overly from the left side of the cage and the junior finished the play to put Ursinus ahead 1-0 just over minutes into the match. Moments later, Overly returned the favor, assisting Steigerwalt on her 14th goal of the season. The score proved to be the game-winner as the Bears took a 2-1 lead and never looked back.

Following a corner attempt by Dickinson to open the second half, Steigerwalt dished to Overly from the left side of the cage and the junior tapped in the ball to add some insurance. Less than three minutes later, Steigerwalt connected with freshman Gemma Dufoe for her sixth score of the season. Overly assisted freshman Katie DeLuca in the 54th minute for the final score.

With the win, the Bears set up a de facto Centennial Conference regular-season championship game against Muhlenberg next Saturday. If Franklin & Marshall wins its two remaining CC contests, Ursinus would need to defeat the Mules by at least two goals to host the championship tournament. If the Bears won by one goal, more tiebreakers would come into play, while Muhlenberg can clinch the outright title with a victory.

Before that, however, the fueld hockey team hosts Catholic on Tuesday, October 25.
