Field Hockey Rolls at Bryn Mawr

BRYN MAWR, Pa. – Maria DiCioccio, Gemma Dufoe, and Aliki Torrence scored two goals each and a litany of teammates accomplished career firsts as the Ursinus College field hockey team coasted to a 9-0 Centennial Conference victory at Bryn Mawr on Wednesday afternoon.

Freshman Erin Saybolt (assist) joined junior Katelyn Hauck (two assists) in registering their first collegiate points for No. 4 Ursinus (5-1, 2-0), which defeated Bryn Mawr (0-6, 0-1) for the 14th straight season and 16th consecutive meeting overall. Sophomore Alexis Short scored her first goal in the second half, and Torrence picked up her first multiple-goal performance in doubling her previous career goal total.

The Bears, who have outscored the Owls 134-1 since renewing their series in 2003, outshot the hosts 34-3 and earned 21 penalty corners. Ursinus has now won 13 consecutive conference road games and stretched its overall CC winning streak to 10.

DiCioccio, who added an assist to her two markers, scored twice against Bryn Mawr for the second straight season.

The Bears needed only 20 seconds to light up the scoreboard in last season's 10-0 victory, but Bryn Mawr proved stingier this time around. Senior Amber Steigerwalt started the parade just over nine minutes in, muscling in a rebound off junior Brooke Overly's blast from the left side of the circle.

Torrence doubled the edge six minutes later, finishing off a beautiful give-and-go with junior Katelyn Hauck for her second goal of the season, a new career high; the assist marked the first collegiate point for Hauck. DiCioccio tallied twice before the half, once on a scrum in front of the cage and once after swiping an Owls player and firing home from in close, to send Ursinus into the break armed with a 4-0 advantage.

Senior Ann Kopera had a hand in the first two goals of the second half, setting up Torrence's blast off a corner before finishing into a wide-open net after a tic-tac-toe sequence with Saybolt. Short ripped home a powerful stroke at the 56:20 mark for her first goal, and Dufoe closed the scoring parade with back-to-back strikes, the first coming just a minute after Short's.

Sophomore Jules Singer played the first half before giving way to junior Sydney Godbey, who made one save in her first action of the year.

With her 46th career goal, Steigerwalt vaulted up three spots into ninth on the program's all-time career points list with 113.

The field hockey team heads to Lancaster for a Saturday showdown with 6th-ranked Franklin & Marshall, the next installment of the rivalry between powerhouses that have faced off in the CC championship game each of the last three years. Game time is set for noon.
