Bears Outwit Profs

COLLEGEVILLE, PA – The #7 ranked Bears of Ursinus College defeated the visiting Profs of Rowan tonight, 4-1. It was the fifth of the season for Ursinus as they rallied off their fourth straight win to move their overall record to 5-1.

Ursinus dominated start to finish in this contest netting the first goal just under five minutes into the match. Danielle Stong (Gilbertsville, Pa. / Boyertown Area) netted her third goal of the season when she found the back of the net at the 4:36 mark of the first half to give the Bears the 1-0 lead.

Junior Amber Steigerwalt  (Warrington, Pa. / Central Bucks South )  then extended the lead to 2-0 when found the net at the 16:12 mark. Steigerwalt also tallied two assists on the evening. Rowan was able to cut the deficit when Johanna James netted one off a penalty corner to make it 2-1 in favor of Ursinus but that was all the offense the Profs could muster.

Seniors Devin Brakel (West Windsor, N.J. / West Windsor Plainsboro North) and Samantha Macchio (Redding, Conn. / Joel Barlow) rounded out the scoring for the Bears to put the game out of reach and any hope of a comeback by Rowan.

Ursinus dominated the stat sheet with 21 total shots and putting seven of those on net while Rowan could only manage four total shots all night and only placed one on net. Rowan goalkeeper Carly DeMarco made seven saves on the night trying to keep the Profs in it but it was not enough. Meanwhile Ursinus goalie Danielle DeSpirito (Mountain Top, Pa. / Crestwood Jr-Sr) had one of her easiest games facing only one shot on net the whole night.

The 4-1 win moved Ursinus to 5-1 overall whole Rowan drops to 3-4 on the season. The Bears will have a quick turnaround as they prepare to take on the Diplomats of F&M on Saturday at noon.
