Field Hockey advances to CC Final with 7-0 win over Johns Hopkins

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Ursinus College junior forward Danielle Stong (Gilbertsville, Pa./Boyertown) and junior forward Devin Brakel (West Windsor, N.J./West Windsor Plainsboro North) each scored three goals as the Bears (15-3) defeated Johns Hopkins (10-9) 7-0 in the semifinals of the 2014 Centennial Conference Field Hockey Championships at Eleanor Frost Snell Field.

The Bears, who are the top seed, will face second-seed Franklin & Marshall at 1 p.m. on Sunday for the championship. The Diplomats defeated third-seed Muhlenberg, 1-0, in the other semifinal on Saturday.

Ursinus scored six of its seven goals in the first half, all of them coming in the first 26 minutes. Stong scored goals in the second and fourth minutes, while junior midfielder Megan Keenan (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson) scoring a goal at 15:45.

Brakel scored her goals in the 18th and 24th minutes, while Stong added one in the 26th minute to give the Bears a 6-0 lead.

Brakel scored the lone goal of the second half, on an assist from junior midfielder Stephanie Cooper (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks West). Cooper had three assists on the day, with Stong and sophomore midfielder Amber Steigerwalt (Warrington, Pa./Central Bucks South) also adding in assists.

Ursinus had a commanding 39-6 lead in shots and had 17 corners to just five for Hopkins.

Junior goalkeeper Danielle DeSpirito had one save on the day, while junior goalkeeper Zoey Atabek had 14 for the Blue Jays.

This will mark Ursinus' tenth appearance in the title game, with the Bears holding a 9-0 mark in the Centennial Championship.
