CHESTERTOWN, Md. – Sixth-ranked Ursinus moved to a perfect 8-0 in the Centennial Conference on Thursday afternoon by defeating Washington College 3-2 in field hockey action.
The Bears, playing on grass for the first time 2010, got goals from three different players, while junior Megan Keenan had two assists.
Ursinus took a 1-0 lead 7:50 into the contest with junior midfielder Stephanie Cooper scored on a shot from the top of the circle. Washington (11-3, 4-3 Centennial) tied the score at 1-all at 24:25 when Elizabeth Davis scored on a penalty corner off of a pass from Allison Remenapp.
The Bears (12-2) went back up 2-1 31:11 into the game when sophomore midfielder Amber Steigerwalt scored on an assist from Keenan on a deflection. The lead increased to 3-1 at 42:54 when junior forward Danielle Stong scored on an assist from Keenan.
Washington got back with one at 3-2 at 59:41 when Jordan Mitchell scored on an assist from Elizabeth Davis. The Shorewomen, also receiving votes in the national poll, almost tied the score with 5:39 left but Jennifer Tordella's shot was saved by defender Jordan Miller. Washington had two more penalty corners in the last five minutes, but only got one shot off.
Ursinus had a 16-9 shot advantage, and a 17-7 edge on corners. Junior goalkeeper Danielle DeSpirito had three saves on the day.
Ursinus will host Dickinson on Saturday, needing a win to clinch home field advantage for the upcoming Centennial Conference playoffs.
