Field Hockey blanks Wilkes, 5-0, in NCAA First Round

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa – Ursinus college sophomore forward Samantha Macchio (Redding, Conn./Joel Barlow) scored three goals as the Bears (15-5) advanced to the NCAA Second Round with a 5-0 win over Wilkes (8-12) on Wednesday night at Snell Field.

The Bears got goals from Macchio in the 8th, 24th and 47th minutes as they advanced on to play Wellesley on Saturday afternoon in Salisbury, Md.

Sophomore midfielder Megan Keenan (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson) had two assists in the win, with sophomore forward Devin Brakel (West Windsor, N.J./West Windsor Plainsboro North) and freshman forward Amber Steigerwalt (Warrington, Pa./Central Bucks South) each adding assists.

Wilkes (8-12) outshot 29-6, got three shots from junior forward Aliya Frankel in the loss.

Ursinus went up 1-0 7:11 into the first half when Macchio scored on an assist from Steigerwalt. Steigerwalt ran the ball up the middle, then passed the ball to Macchio for the goakl.

Steigerwalt scored her lone goal of the game at 15:40 when she made a solo run into the circle for a 2-0 lead.

Macchio added her second goal of the game at 23:31 when she tipped in a pass from Keenan, followed by Keenan assisting at the fourth goal of the game at 30:22 as sophomore midfielder Stephanie Cooper (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks West) took the long pass and redirected it.

Macchio's third goal, at 46:10 on an assist from Brakel, gave the Bears the final 5-0 margin.

Ursinus owned the corner advantage, 12-1. 

In goal, sophomore Danielle DeSpirito (Mountain Top, Pa./Crestwood) made two saves for Ursinus, with sophomore goalkeeper Alexis Reed making 13 saves for the Colonels.
