Field Hockey corners Haverford, 4-1

HAVERFORD, Pa. – Ursinus out-cornered Haverford 22-2 on Wednesday as the Bears (6-2, 4-1 Centennial) defeated Haverford (5-4, 1-2 Centennial) 4-1 on Wednesday night at Swan Field in field hockey play.

Ursinus, after allowing an early goal, held Haverford to just two shots the rest of the way as the Bears improved to 4-1 in Centennial play.

Four different players scored for the Bears, including sophomore forward Samantha Macchio (Redding, Conn./Joel Barlow) who had a goal and an assist in the win. Ursinus held a 16-3 advantage in shots.

After Haverford went up 1-0 ten minutes in on a goal from Catherine Aronowicz, Ursinus answered at 13:17 when junior forward Maddie Craig (Cape May, N.J./Lower Cape May) scored on an assist from senior defender Kara Bowen (Forty Fort, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) to tie the score at 1-all.

Sophomore midfielder Stephanie Cooper (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks West) scored the eventual game-winning goal at 25:38 unassisted for a 2-1 halftime lead.

Freshman midfielder Amber Steigerwalt (Warrington, Pa./Central Bucks South) scored on an assist from Macchio at 48:52, with Macchio scoring on an assist from sophomore forward Devin Brakel (West Windsor, N.J./West Windsor Plainsboro North) at 63:14 for the final 4-1 margin.

Sophomore goalkeeper Danielle DeSpirito (Mountain Top, Pa./Crestwood) made two saves on the night for Ursinus, who hosts Johns Hopkins on Saturday.
