Field Hockey knocks off Messiah, 2-1

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Ursinus scored twice in the second half, as the Bears' offensive unit came alive in a 2-1 win over 10th-ranked Messiah on Wednesday night in field hockey action.

The win marked Ursinus' first win over a ranked opponent this year, and also marked the first time Ursinus defeated Messiah at home since Ursinus joined Division III in 2002.

Ursinus got on a board at 42:39 when sophomore defender Megan Keenan (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson) scored off of a corner as sophomore midfielder Kelsey Reed (Lancaster, Pa./Conestoga Valley) and junior defender Nora Kornfeld (Kingston, Pa./Wyoming Seminary) had the assists.

Sophomore forward Devin Brakel (West Windsor, N.J./West Windsor Plainsboro North) scored the eventual game-winner at 49:10 on a rebound off of Messiah goalkeeper Molly Gebrosky.

Messiah scored early as Gina Kellett scored on a rebound 1:08 into the game accounting for the Falcons (4-2) only score. The Falcons turned on the offensive pressure early, before Ursinus would eventually get the ball into their end in the final 15 minutes of the half.

The Bears owned a 13-8 shot advantage in the first half and had six penalty corners to five for the Falcons.

The corner advantage was all Ursinus in the second half, as the Bears had 11 penalty corners to Messiah's one. Ursinus finished with a 27-11 advantage in shots and a 17-6 advantage in corners.

Sophomore goalkeeper Danielle DeSpirito (Mountain Top, Pa./Crestwood) had four saves for Ursinus, while Gebrosky had eight for the Falcons.

Ursinus heads to McDaniel Saturday.
