Field Hockey battles seventh-ranked F&M, drops 2-1 decision

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Facing defending champion Franklin & Marshall, the Ursinus College field hockey team outshot the Diplomats and outcornered them on the day.

However, the seventh-ranked Diplomats (6-0, 2-0 Centennial) converted on a penalty stroke in the first half and added one goal with 1:54 left in the first half in a 2-1 win over Ursinus (3-2, 2-1 Centennial) Saturday afternoon.

Ursinus held a 22-7 shot advantage and a 12-6 advantage on corners.

The Bears had three shots in the first five minutes, but, two of them were blocked while one went wide.

A shot from F&M's Audrey Buckman at 10:15 almost gave the Dips an early advantage, but, it was saved at the line by sophomore midfielder Jordan Miller (Stevens, Pa./Cocalico).

Six second later, the Dips did take a lead as junior defender Mallory Gibson scored on a penalty stroke for a  1-0 lead.

Back came Ursinus, as the Bears took possession and had six penalty corners over the next 20 minutes with nine shots. Three of them were saved by senior goalkeeper Avery Koep.

F&M took the 2-0 lead at 33:06 when senior forward Katie Cecere scored unassisted.

Ursinus finally got one through at 49:11 when sophomore defender Megan Keenan (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson) scored to cut the Dips lead to 2-1.

Ursinus outshot the Dips 6-2 over the final 20 minutes but could not get one across.

Koep finished with eight saves, while sophomore goalkeeper Danielle DeSpirito (Mountain Top, Pa./Crestwood) made two.
