Field Hockey opens with 5-2 win over Eastern Mennonite

HARRISONBURG, Va. – Ursinus scored three goals over the last 12 minutes as the sixth-ranked Bears (1-0) opened the season with a 5-2 win over Eastern Mennonite (0-2) Saturday afternoon in field hockey action.

Freshman forward Devin Brakel (West Windsor, N.J./West Windsor Plainsboro North) had two goals, while sophomore defender Nora Kornfeld (Kingston, Pa./Wyoming Seminary) and senior forward  Catherine Bitterly (Rumson, N.J./Rumson-Fair Haven) each added a goal and an assist in the win.

After falling behind 1-0 5:55 into the game, Ursinus got on the board at 20:21 when Megan Keenan scored on an assist from Kornfeld to tie the score followed by Brakel's first goal at 32:06 on an assist from Jenna Stover.

Adriana Santiago then scored her second goal of the game for the Royals to re-tie the score at 2-all at 38:29, before Bitterly scored the eventual game-winning goal at 57:26 on an assist from junior forward Abby Wood (Lumberton, N.J./Rancocas Valley Regional).

Brakel added her second goal of the game at 63:32 on an assist from freshman forward Samantha Macchio (Redding, Conn./Joel Barlow), followed by a goal from Kornfield at 65:21 on an assist from Bitterly.

Sophomore goalkeeper Paige McElhenny (Egg Harbor Township, N.J./Egg Harbor Township) made five saves in goal for the Bears, who owned a 35-14 advantage on shots.

The Bears head to Messiah on Thursday.
