Field Hockey rallies to defeat Rowan, 5-4

GLASSBORO, N.J. – In a matchup of two nationally ranked teams, Ursinus (2-0) rallied back from a 3-1 halftime deficit to take a 5-4 win over Rowan Wednesday evening in field hockey play.

Senior forward Alyssa Thren (Barto, Pa./Upper Perkiomen) scored three of her game-high four goals in the second half, including two in the final 20 minutes of the game. Senior forward Corinne Freeman (Freehold, N.J./St. John Vienney) added in the other goal, coming off a Thren assist at 47:16.

Thren scored the Bears' (2-0) lone goal of the first half on a penalty corner at ten minutes even to tie the score at 1-all. Rowan then got goals from Marisa Schoepflin and Katie Griffis to take a 3-1 lead into intermission.

In the second half, Thren scored at 45:08 to cut the Profs (2-1) lead to 3-2, followed by Freeman's goal which locked the score at 3-all. Rowan, ranked 15th in the latest coaches' poll, took a 4-3 lead on a goal from Julie Cairone at 48:51.

Thren's third goal at 56:39 off her own rebound tied the score at 4-all, followed by the eventual game-winning goal with 6:50 left for the final 5-4 margin.

Senior goalkeeper Jill Lukens (Furlong, Pa./Central Bucks East) made 16 saves for Ursinus as she faced 28 shots. The Bears, ranked third in the coaches' poll, heads to Cortland State on Sunday for another key regional matchup.
