ASTON, Pa. – Third-ranked Ursinus started off the season by outshooting Neumann 46-5 as the Bears (1-0) defeated the Knights (0-1) 3-0 Friday afternoon in field hockey play.
The Bears won their first game under new head coach Janelle Benner.
Ursinus took a 1-0 lead in the first half as junior midfielder Julie Pilla (Mullica Hill, N.J./Gloucester Catholic) scored 17:55 into the game accounting for the only goal of the first half.
In the second half, Ursinus scored goals back-to-back as senior forward Corinne Freeman (Freehold, N.J./St. John Vienney) scored at 55:08, followed by a goal from senior forward Alyssa Thren (Barto, Pa./Upper Perkiomen) 53 seconds later.
Senior goalkeeper Jill Lukens (Furlong, Pa./C.B. East) had three saves on the afternoon. Sophomore midfielder Jenna Stover (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) had nine shots on the day, while Thren had eight.
For Neumann, sophomore goalkeeper Lindsey Kasecamp had 21 saves.
