COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – For the third straight season, the Ursinus College field hockey team will be one of the four teams left in the NCAA tournament as the Bears (20-1) defeated Middlebury (13-5) 3-0 on Sunday afternoon in the NCAA quarterfinals.

The Bears will face top-ranked Messiah on Saturday in the semifinals hosted by Christopher Newport. Bowdoin and Skidmore will meet in the other semifinal, with the championship scheduled for Sunday at 1 p.m.

"It's good to get a hard-fought victory over a very talented Middlebury team," said head coach Laura Moliken. "I'm happy for our team, especially our seniors who have worked hard to get us back to this point."

Three different players scored for Ursinus, with senior midfielder Bridget Resetco (West Chester, Pa./Downingtown West), junior forward Corinne Freeman (Freehold, N.J./St. John Vienney) and junior forward Alyssa Thren (Barto, Pa./Upper Perkiomen) each netting goals.

Resetco scored the first goal of the game on a hard shot from the top right corner 12:56 in for a 1-0 Ursinus lead. Senior midfielder Michelle Wimmer (Palm, Pa./Upper Perkiomen) had the assist.

At 20:03, junior forward Corinne Freeman (Freehold, N.J./St. John Vienney) gave Ursinus a 2-0 lead on an assist from senior forward Jennifer Bayzick (Sugarloaf, Pa./Hazelton Area).

The final goal of the game came at 40:36 as Thren scored off of a penalty corner as she dribbled through the Middlebury defense for a 3-0 lead.

Ursinus, who owned a 28-9 shot advantage, held Middlebury scoreless while senior goalkeeper LauraLee Lightwood-Mater (Bethlehem, Pa./George School) had one save.

For Middlebury, junior goalkeeper Becca Shaw had 13 saves.

This is the second straight time that Messiah and Ursinus have met in the semifinals. Messiah handed Ursinus its only loss this season, by a 4-2 score back on September 3.
