COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Third-ranked Ursinus scored six unanswered goals as the Bears (19-1) advanced to the NCAA quarterfinals with a 7-2 win over Juniata (18-5) on Saturday in field hockey play.

The Bears will host Middlebury, who defeated NESCAC rival Tufts 3-2 in the other game on the day. Ursinus will host the Panthers at 1 p.m. on Sunday for the right to advance to the NCAA semifinals hosted by Christopher Newport.

In the game, junior forward Alyssa Thren (Barto, Pa./Upper Perkiomen) scored four goals, one goal shy of the in-game tournament record of five. Senior forward Jennifer Bayzick (Sugarloaf, Pa./Hazleton Area) added in three goals as the Bears held a 29-10 shots advantage.

"It was a great win for our team," said head coach Laura Moliken. "Our team fell behind early but that battled back and finished strong."

Juniata got goals from sophomore midfielder Caroline Phillips and junior forward Kim Amrod in the loss, while Paula Price had an assist.

The Eagles struck first, scoring off their first penalty corner at 8:23 as Phillips found the left of the cage on the pass from Price.

Ursinus struck back to tie at 1-all at 14:40 as Thren scored unassisted. Her second goal of the game came at 20:32 as she was assisted by junior midfielder Bridget Resetco (West Chester, Pa./Downingtown West). Resetco would assist on the next goal, scored by Bayzick at 40:27 to give Ursinus a 3-1 lead.

Bayzick's second goal of the game at 42:24, on a pass from Thren, put Ursinus up 4-1.

Thren then scored back-to-back goals, the first coming at 52:16 on a pass from junior forward Corrine Freeman (Freehold, N.J./St. John Vienney) followed by another at 55:05 on a pass from senior midfielder Megan Yoder (Lititz, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite).

Amrod just the Ursinus lead to 6-2 as she scored on a put back with 12:05 left in the game.

Ursinus' final goal came at 68:50 as Bayzick scored on a Resetco assist.

Ursinus got six saves from senior goalkeeper LauraLee Lightwood-Mater (Bethlehem, Pa./George School) in the win. For Juniata, senior goalkeeper Moira Nugent had 12 saves.

This is Ursinus' third straight appearance in the quarterfinals, where they have won the last three times.
