Field Hockey heads to CC finals with 6-0 win over Washington

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Ursinus College field hockey team advanced to the Centennial Conference final for the eighth straight time on Saturday, as the third-ranked Bears (17-1) defeated Washington College (9-10) 6-0 at Eleanor Frost Snell Alumnae Field.

The Bears will face third-seeded Haverford, who upended Johns Hopkins in the second game 6-2.

The Bears got three goals from senior midfielder Michelle Wimmer (Palm, Pa./Upper Perkiomen), who scored in the 26th, 46th and 58th minute as Ursinus owned a 34-4 shot advantage.

The Bears went up 1-0 at 8:46 as junior forward Alyssa Thren (Barto, Pa./Upper Perkiomen) assisted on the first goal by senior forward Jennifer Bayzick (Sugarloaf, Pa./Hazelton Area). Thren would add her first goal at 14:13 as she scored on a shot from the top of the circle for a 2-0 advantage.

Wimmer's first goal came at 25:24 off of a corner on an assist by senior defender Taylor Weidensaul (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin) for a 3-0 lead. The final goal of the half came at 31:04 as junior forward Corinne Freeman (Freehold, N.J./St. John Vienney) scored on a tap in off of a deflection.

Wimmer's scored both of Ursinus' goal in the second half, the first one coming on a penalty stroke at 45:11, followed by a goal at 57:30 from Wimmer off of an assist from Bayzick.

The defensive unit held Washington to just four shots, as Ursinus enjoyed a 34-4 shot advantage. For the Bears, senior goalkeeper LauraLee Lightwood-Mater (Bethlehem, Pa./George School) made a save.

Ursinus will face Haverford at 2 p.m. on Sunday. The Bears have won the last six Centennial Conference crowns.
