COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Ursinus ran its record to 4-0 for the second time in the last four seasons as the Bears (4-0, 3-0 Centennial) defeated McDaniel (1-3, 1-2 Centennial) 40-21 on Saturday at Patterson Field. 

Ursinus overcame adversity as senior quarterback Chris Curran (Oceanview, N.J./Ocean City) left the game in the second quarter with an injury.

In his place, junior quarterback Kevin Monahan (East Windsor, N.J./Hightstown) stepped in and threw for 181 yards and three scores, all of which went to senior wide out Jerry Rahill (Chalfont, Pa./Archbishop Wood). Rahill caught TD passes from 39, 4 and 4-yards out in the win. 

Before leaving the game, Curran threw for 61 yards and a score.

Senior running back Jason Golderer (Philadelphia, Pa./Bishop McDevitt) continued to run the ball well for the Bears, rushing for 160 yards on 32 carries and a score. The Bears finished with 494 yards of total offense on the day, 252 of it coming on the ground. Freshman running back Corey Kelly (Conshohocken, Pa./Plymouth-Whitemarsh) rushed for 57 yards as well.

Defensively, Ursinus held McDaniel to 272 yards and only 77 yards rushing. McDaniel senior running back Joe Rollins, the conference's top rusher coming into the game, had just 65 yards on 18 carries.

Sophomore quarterback Ryan Yamada threw for two scores and 195 yards, with both scores going to senior wide receiver Nick O'Melia. 

Senior linebacker Brian Taylor (Philadelphia, Pa./Episcopal) had six tackles for Ursinus.

Ursinus was a perfect 6-for-6 in the red zone on the afternoon and converted on 11 of 15 third downs. 

After Curran threw an early pick – on the first play of the game for the Bears – the defense stepped up and forced a three-and-out. 

Ursinus' first score came at the end of a seven-play, 82-yard drive when Golderer ran from three-yards out for a 7-0 lead with 9:50 left. On Ursinus' next drive, Curran threw a 39-yard pass to Rahill for a 14-0 lead with 3:03 left.

McDaniel got on the board in the second quarter when the Green Terror special teams unit blocked a Bears' punt in the end zone. Sophomore defensive back Marty Windisch recovered the punt off of a block from junior wide receiver Mike Oliveto with 14:46 left.

A ten-play, 35 yard drive followed for Ursinus, capped by a 36-yard field goal from sophomore kicker Eric Boyer (Fort Washington, Pa./Upper Dublin) with 10:02 left, making the score 17-7. 

The lead grew to 24-7 on the next Bears drive, when Monahan completed a 7-yard pass to junior wide receiver Josh Williams (Jamison, Pa./Central  Bucks South) with 1:39 left. 

McDaniel could cut the lead to 24-14 on its first drive of the third quarter when Yamada threw a sideline route to O'Melia for a 48-yard score with 13:04 left. 

The Bears went back up 27-14 on a field goal by Boyer from 23-yards out with 9:21 left. 

Monahan threw a 4-yard score to Rahill with 14:16 left in the game for a  33-14 lead, followed by Ursinus stopping a Green Terror scoring drive with 10:02 left when senior defensive lineman Andrew Fiorentino (Oceanview, N.J./Ocean City) recovered a fumble at the Bears' 12-yard line.

Each team would score one last time, as Yamada and O'Melia connected on a 19-yard pass with 6:12 left for a  33-21 score, followed by Monahan throwing a 4-yard score to Rahill with just 1:14 left in the game.

McDaniel's end zone bomb at the end of the game was intercepted by sophomore defensive back Dysean Alexander (Bethlehem, Pa./Moravian Academy).

Ursinus once again controlled the time of possession, holding the ball for 37 minutes.

The Bears head to Moravian next Saturday, before the bye week.
