COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Ursinus went balanced in its home opener on Friday night, rushing for 154 and throwing for 192 in a 28-20 win over The College of New Jersey in the opener for both teams.

Ursinus got 30 rushes for 105 yards from senior running back Jason Golderer (Philadelphia, Pa./Bishop McDevitt), who also caught four passes for 26 yards and a score.

Senior quarterback Chris Curran (Oceanview, N.J./Ocean City) threw for 192 on 13-for-22 and two scores, and rank for 30 yards. Junior quarterback Kevin Monahan (East Windsor, N.J./Hightstown) rushed for a one-yard score in the third quarter as he subbed in for Curran after his helmet popped off.

The College of New Jersey scored twice in the fourth quarter to pull within eight, but, Ursinus held the ball for nearly 22 minutes in the second half en route to the win.

Junior wide out Josh Williams (Jamison, Pa./Central Bucks South) caught five passes for 99 yards and a score.

Defensively, sophomore defensive end Steve Ambs (Pottstown, Pa./Pottsgrove) made eight tackles, had two sacks and four tackles for losses of 11 yards.

Sophomore defensive back Kyle Adkins (Holland, Pa./Archbishop Wood) had a 36-yard interception return for a touchdown in the first quarter, accounting for the first Ursinus score of 2013.

The Lions got 141 yards from freshman quarterback Christopher Spellman on 10-for-23 passing with sophomore running back Victor Scalici rushing for 78 yards on 17 carries. 

Senior linebacker Nick Bricker made 17 tackles on the night.

TCNJ struck first as Scalici scored on a 4-yard rush, capping a game-opening, 72-yard drive in 4:48 for a 6-0 lead. After Ursinus' first drive stalled out at the Bear 47, TCNJ took over at their own 13.

However, on the third play of the drive, Adkins picked off Spellman and returned it 36 yards for a 7-6 lead with 5:14 left in the first.

The Bears went up 14-6 on its next drive, when Curran threw a 8-yard TD pass to Golderer ending a seven-play, 74-yard drive in 3:54 with 13:20 left in the first half.

Ursinus went up 21-6 when Williams caught a ten-yard pass from Curran with 1:30 left in the half.

An extensive 16 play, 74-yard drive that ate up 9:37 off the clock in the third quarter gave Ursinus a 28-6 lead when Monahan ended the drive on a 1-yard sneak with 17 seconds left.  Ursinus was 3-for-3 on third-down conversions on that drive.

TCNJ would get to within 28-13 when Scalici rushed for a five-yard score on a nine-play, 65-yard drive with 11:57 left in the game. The Lions scored on their next drive, when Spellman tossed a 22-yard pass to Kyle Janeczek with 8:17 left in the game.

Like the third quarter, Ursinus would eat up clock – 7:15 worth – giving the Lions back the ball with 51 seconds left in the game.

Ursinus won its third straight night game, and its second straight at home taking back to last season.

The Bears open Centennial play next week at Gettysburg.
