Football runs down Moravian, 24-7

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. - The Ursinus football team closed the first half of the season on a high note on Saturday, with a 24-7 win over Moravian at Patterson Field.

The Bears (3-2, 2-2 Centennial) held the Greyhounds (2-3, 2-2 Centennial) to just 95 yards of total offense including just nine yards rushing. The Ursinus defensive unit played havoc with the Moravian offense, sacking Greyhound quarterback Jimmy Lahue six times on the day.

The offense complied a 366 yard day in holding the ball close to 38 minutes on the day.

Junior running back Bryan Ellis (Owings Mills, Md./McDonogh School) rushed for a game-high 136 yards on 33 carries as he crossed the 2,000 yard mark for his career. Junior quarterback Chris Curran (Oceanview, N.J./Ocean City) threw for 225 yards and two scores, while rushing for 13 yards on the day on nine carries.

Defensively, junior defensive end Andrew Fiorentino (Oceanview, N.J./Ocean City) had three sacks for a total of 25 yards, while senior defensive tackle Greg Fontaina (Millburn, N.J./Millburn) had a sack-and-a-half.

Sophomore wide receiver Josh Williams (Jamison, Pa./Central Bucks South) caught a game-high six balls for 112 yards and a score.

Moravian was led by Lahue who threw for 86 yards. Freshman wide receiver Jimmy McCarthy scored the Greyhounds lone touchdown in the second quarter as a special teams snafu by the Bears gave Moravian a short field.

Ursinus took a 7-0 lead in the first quarter as they took the opening kick and marched 76 yards in 12 plays, capped by a three-yard run from Eillis with 8:55 left. The Bears would go up 14-0 on their next offensive possession as Curran threw a 41-yard bomb to sophomore wide receiver Darius Jones (Lawnside, N.J./Haddon Heights) with 1:47 left in the quarter.

The teams would then trade punts, until Moravian scored with 4:16 left in the quarter to cut the deficit to 14-7. Ursinus would respond with a seven-play, 41 yard drive capped by a 42-yard field goal from freshman kicker Eric Boyer (Fort Washington, Pa./Upper Dublin) with 1:19 left in the quarter for a 17-7 Ursinus advantage. Boyer missed a 43-yarder as time expired in the first half.

Aside from the first drive of the game, and the short yardage gained as a result of the bad punt, Moravian did not have a drive cross midfield the entire game.

The final score came with 6:02 left in the third when Curran found Williams in the back left corner of the end zone for a 24-7 lead.

Ursinus will enjoy its bye week, then head to Juniata on Saturday, October 13, for a noon kickoff.
