Football falls short against F&M, 40-28

LANCASTER, Pa. – Franklin & Marshall got two touchdowns from Lamont Jackson and Jordan Zachery, while quarterback E.J. Schneider threw for another as the Diplomats (2-1, 1-1 Centennial) defeated Ursinus (1-2, 0-2 Centennial) 40-28 on Saturday afternoon.

Ursinus, who took a 14-13 lead midway through the second quarter, saw F&M score 27 straight points to take a 40-21 lead with just over three minutes left in the fourth quarter.

Junior quarterback Chris Curran (Oceanview, N.J./Ocean City) finished the day completing 23-of-45 passes for 266 yards and three scores. He also rushed for a team-high 73 yards and a score.

Junior wide receiver Jerry Rahill (Chalfont, Pa./Archbishop Wood) caught a team and game-high seven passes for 89 yards and a touchdown. While senior running back Jason Golderer (Philadelphia, Pa./Bishop McDevitt) and sophomore Darius Jones (Lawnside, N.J./Haddon Heights) also had touchdown catches.

Defensively, junior defensive back Matt Ruby (Selinsgrove, Pa./Selinsgrove Area) and sophomore defensive back Kerwyn Ross (Westhampton, N.J./Rancocas Valley) each finished with six solo stops.

F&M struck first, as they went 51 yards in eight plays in 3:53 with Schneider throwing a 7-yard score to Devin Hunter for a 6-0 lead. The Diplomats increased their lead to 13-0 with 6:03 left in the first quarter when Jackson rushed for a 9-yard score.

Ursinus got on the board with 12:54 left in the second quarter when Curran completed an 11-yard pass to Rahill for a 13-7 F&M lead.

After holding F&M to a 3-and-out, Ursinus went six plays, 53-yards to take a 14-13 lead on a one-yard plunge from Curran.

F&M scored on its next two drives, as Schneider completed TD pass to Zackery from 15 and 21 yards out for a 26-14 lead with 1:00 to go in the half.

Ursinus answered quickly, going 67 yards in seven plays with Curran throwing a 20-yards pass for a 26-21 F&M lead with two seconds left.

F&M took a 33-21 lead in the fourth quarter when Scott LaValva scored on a 16-yard run with 14:51 left in regulation.  The Dips would go up 40-21 with 3:29 left when Ursinus turned the ball over on its own 6-yard line. F&M then scored on a 6-yard run from Jackson with 3:19 left.

The final touchdown came with 1:41 left when Golderer scored on a 4-yard pass from Curran for the final score of 40-28.

Ursinus heads to McDaniel on Saturday.
