Baseball Downed on the Road at Alvernia

READING, PA. - The Ursinus College baseball team fell behind in the first inning and were unable to make a comeback against Alvernia College Friday in nonconference action. The Golden Wolves jumped on the board in the first inning and never looked back snapping their three-game losing streak.

With the loss, the Bears drop to 5-9 on the season. Meanwhile, Alvernia from the Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) improves to 5-9-1 overall.

Casey Murphy turned in a solid outing on the mound. In his third start of the year, the junior went 3.0 innings of four-hit baseball with one strikeout while allowing three earned runs.

For the Golden Wolves, junior lefty Jake Reese earned the win after starting the game and going four innings, just allowing two hits while striking out three Bears.

Alvernia jumped on the board in the first inning after Lucas Flloyd scored on a wild pitch with two outs in the inning. In the second, Dylan Crammer and Matteo Falcone each reached base and advanced into scoring position, but Reese worked out of the jam with a pop up in the infield and a strikeout.

The Golden Wolves added two more runs in the third inning after a leadoff homerun from Connor Friedel and Nick Nutile singled to left scoring Joe Ginder. Alvernia made the score 5-0 in the fifth, after Kyle Newton blasted a two-run homerun to left field.

The Bears answered back in the fifth inning, scoring two runs after Griffith singled to left and Crammer doubled to left scoring both Griffith and Keegan Stem. Alvernia would add insurance runs in both the fifth and seventh innings, finishing with a 7-3 victory. Griffith and Crammer both finished with two hits while freshman Branden Melendez went 1-4.

The Bears will host Eastern University for a doubleheader tomorrow for their home opener at Thomas Field.
