Baseball Drops Two against Rochester

MYRTLE BEACH, SC. - The Ursinus College baseball team dropped games two and three of the series against Rochester University on Thursday afternoon by a score of 7-0 and 9-1.

With the loss, the Bears fell to 5-5 overall as they begin a doubleheader with Catholic University tomorrow. Meanwhile, the Yellow Jackets improved to 8-1 overall.

Game One: Rochester 7 Ursinus 1

Casey Murphy started on the mound for the Bears going three innings allowing seven hits and three free passes. Senior Luke Verga relieved Murphy in the fourth inning and pitched three innings, only allowing two hits and one unearned run in his second appearance of the season. Rochester jumped out to an early 2-0 lead after two errors in the second allowed Luke Piontek and Matt Cappelletti to score.

In the fourth inning, the Yellow Jackets added four more runs after the first five batters all reached base. Doubles from Dan Tirabassi and Jackson Reed brought home three runs, while the fourth run was scored on a wild pitch. The Bears were only able muster five hits in total while Rochester added an insurance run in the fifth inning to make the score 7-0 for their fifth consecutive victory.

Game Two: Rochester 9 Ursinus 1

Rochester's Dillion Bevan took the mound in game two and turned in a complete game allowing just seven hits and one earned run. Meanwhile, for the Bears Kieran Hollander went 3.2 innings allowing six hits and fanned four Yellow Jackets. Rochester jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the third inning, after Joe Siciliano singled to center scoring Luke Gregory. The Bears answered in the bottom half of the inning after Solomon Griffith doubled to left center scoring Keegan Stem. Ursinus was able to get at least one man on base in each of the final four innings but were unable to capitalize as Rochester pulled away for a 9-1 victory.

Stem, Griffith, and Peter Balos each went 2 for 3 in game two but the Bears were unable to keep up with the high-powered offense of the Yellow Jackets.

The Bears will return to action tomorrow for a doubleheader against Catholic for the final two games of their Spring Break trip.
