Fiorentino, Mumme Make History

Fiorentino, Mumme Make History

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – Dom Fiorentino and Alex Mumme re-wrote the Ursinus baseball program's record books in the first two innings of the Bears' 13-9 setback at DeSales.

Ursinus (10-9) pounded out a season-high 19 hits as the Bears fell in an offensive game that saw the home team take advantage of its 13 hits and 11 free passes at the plate. The game was hanging in the balance, tied 8-8 before DeSales' four-run seventh inning.

However, the junior hitting duo wasted little time to etch their names into program history. Fiorentino tripled to right-center to lead off the game; the three-bagger was his school record-breaking 8th of the young season, surpassing Mike Gizzi's school standard that had stood since 2003.

A leadoff single and two walks filled the bases before Mumme delivered a two-run double to left to go up 3-0 in the second. The double was Mumme's 45th, breaking 2016 Ursinus graduate Chris Jablonski's career school record. He added another double in the fifth and went 3-for-6 with two RBI and a run on the night.

Fiorentino and Mumme continue to be the straws that stir the drink atop Ursinus' potent lineup. Fiorentino, extended his hitting streak to 13 games and has collected a hit in 18 of 19 games and scored a run in all but two games. Mumme, meanwhile, has reached base in every game and scored a run in all but one. The powerful right fielder has registered a hit in all but two contests.

The Bears scored the first run of the game when sophomore designated hitter Will Peiffer flew out to center, scoring Fiorentino from third. Peiffer went 2-for-5 with two runs and two RBI.

DeSales (10-11) plated five runs in the bottom half of the second on four hits, including two doubles, as the Bears went to their bullpen in the frame.

Mumme picked up his second hit to begin the fourth. Freshman Jon Moldoff brought Mumme home on his double to get the Bears within a run, 5-4. Moldoff finished 2-for-5 with two RBI and a run. After a sacrifice bunt by sophomore Jerry Scavone, classmate Eric Gross' two-out single scored Moldoff to tie the game 5-5. Gross went 3-for-4 at the dish with a run and RBI.

The Bulldogs grabbed the lead back in the bottom of the fourth with three runs.

Ursinus cut the lead to 8-7 with two runs in the fifth. Mumme's third knock and second double of the game started a two-out rally. He scored when Peiffer tripled down the left-field line, and Moldoff drove in Peiffer on his double.

A two-out infield single by freshman Dan Icaza tied the game, 8-8, in the sixth.

The Bears worked out of a bases-loaded threat in the sixth, but the Bulldogs scored four go-ahead runs in the seventh.

Senior Carter Usowski chipped away at the deficit in the eighth when he doubled in a run, but the Bulldogs tacked on an insurance run in the eighth.

DeSales' Max Antos earned the win in relief.

The Bears get another crack at 6th-ranked Swarthmore Friday after nearly stunning the Garnet Tuesday as a ninth-inning rally fell a run short.
