IMMACULATA, Pa. – For the second straight road outing, the Ursinus College baseball team fell into a huge hole and nearly dug out before coming up short in a non-conference shootout. This time it was at Immaculata on Wednesday, when the Bears trailed by as many as nine runs but made things interesting in a 12-8 decision.

Senior Alex Campbell finished 3-for-5 with two runs and two RBI and freshman Mike Stanziale was 2-for-3 with three RBI for Ursinus (21-9). The Bears trailed 7-0 in the fifth inning and 12-3 in the seventh before making a late surge; on Monday, they were down 11-0 to DeSales but put a scare into the Bulldogs in a 14-11 slugfest.

Pet Devenney drove in five runs for Immaculata (18-4), which was a day removed from knocking off No. 11 Alvernia.

Devenney accounted for the first of four runs in the bottom of the second inning, bouncing an RBI single through the left side with two outs. Ryan Ficca's two-run base hit capped the frame, and Devenney added a two-RBI double to make it 6-0 in the third.

Down seven runs, Ursinus started its response in the fifth. The Bears plated three two-out runs thanks to consecutive RBI singles by Campbell, Stanziale, and freshman Alex Mumme. But Devenney tacked on a second two-run double in a five-run sixth for the Mighty Macs, who looked to have things well in hand with a 12-3 lead.

Not so fast, as the Bears' prolific offense again refused to go down without a battle. Ursinus scored four times in the seventh, two on back-to-back singles by Campbell and Stanziale and the others on two straight bases-loaded walks to seniors Tom Carey and Tyler Strano. Stanziale made it 12-8 with an RBI fielder's choice in the eighth, and Carey doubled with one out in the ninth before Immaculata shut down the potential comeback.

Junior Travis Kozak reached base three times on a pair of hits and a walk, and came around to score all three times.

Stanziale is 6-for-8 with four runs and four RBI in his last two starts, while Carey drove in his sixth run in 18 at-bats this season. Strano's RBI was his second of the season, and he also registered his second career stolen base.

Jason McCormick was 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBI for Immaculata, and Ficca had three RBI to support Devenney's huge day.

Seniors Connor McCarthy and Brandon Weidenfeld and junior Matt Radwanski each pitched at least an inning of scoreless relief for the Bears.

Ursinus concludes its Centennial Conference series with Swarthmore on Friday, April 21.
