COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Between Alex Mumme's bat and Brandon Weidenfeld's arm, the Ursinus College baseball team had enough to complete a sweep of Penn State Berks with a 7-5 home victory on Thursday.

Mumme continued his remarkable raking with three more doubles, giving him five in his last two games – and a team-high 12 in a mere 35 at-bats. The freshman finished 3-for-4, scoring twice and delivering the go-ahead runs with a two-run double to right in the bottom of the fourth as Ursinus (18-6) rebounded from a tough loss to Franklin & Marshall 24 hours earlier.

All of the game's scoring came in the first four innings, mostly thanks to a dominant relief outing from Weidenfeld. The senior southpaw pitched five scoreless innings, striking out four without a walk and conceding just five singles for his first career win.

Toby Welk was 4-for-5 with a double and two RBI for the Nittany Lions (10-12), and had a chance as the tying run in the top of the ninth. But Weidenfeld got him to smoke a hard-hit grounder to sophomore Carter Usowski, who flipped to senior Kieran Geyer at second to start a game-ending 6-4-3 twin killing.

After Penn State Berks took a 1-0 lead in the first, senior Alex Campbell blasted a high-arcing two-run homer – his fourth of the season – over the fence in left field to give the Bears a 2-1 lead. Mumme recorded the first of his three doubles and scored on a sacrifice fly by senior Austin Kurey to make it 3-1.

The Nittany Lions loaded the bases with no outs in the second, but senior Connor McCarthy put out the fire in just three pitches, getting a 6-4-3 double play and a ground-out to wriggle out of the jam with only one run allowed.

Welk's double tied it at 3 in the third before senior Avery Perez ripped an RBI single to left to score Mumme in the bottom half.

Berks took the lead back with two in the fourth before the Bears went ahead for good with a three-run outburst. An error allowed the tying run to come home, and Mumme capped the scoring with aa double over the right fielder's head to plate senior CJ Diana and junior Travis Kozak with what proved to be the winning runs.

Kozak scored two runs for Ursinus, and senior Jake Banks recorded his second hit of the season.

Both teams finished with ten hits, and they combined for seven errors – four on Berks and three for Ursinus – which led to seven unearned runs overall.

The Bears complete their season series with Franklin & Marshall in Lancaster on Friday afternoon.
