COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Ursinus College baseball team clawed its way out of an three-run deficit in Wednesday's Centennial Conference clash with Franklin & Marshall, but the Diplomats capitalized on an error to plate the go-ahead runs in the ninth inning and held on for a 5-3 victory at Thomas Field.

Freshman Alex Mumme ripped a pair of doubles for Ursinus (17-6, 5-2), which trailed 3-0 before tying the game on junior Travis Kozak's run-scoring bunt in the seventh. But the Diplomats (16-10-1, 4-2-1) finally got to junior Matt Radwanski in the ninth, putting its first two men on before a throwing error allowed the game-winning run to score.

David Iacobucci put Franklin & Marshall in front 2-0 with a towering two-run blast in the top of the first, and Danny Blugis scored on a wild pitch to make it 3-0 in the second.

The Bears had little going against Diplomats starter Sam Ackerman, who struck out seven in the first four innings and ten for the game. Usowski's reached on a one-out single, and Mumme brought him home two batters later with a double to right center.

The Diplomats had runners on second and third with only one out in the fifth when the Bears turned to Radwanski, who shut down the threat with a pair of strikeouts and held the Blue and White scoreless over the next three-plus frames.

Radwanski's brilliance allowed Ursinus to close the gap with single runs in the fifth and sixth. Senior Austin Kurey's two-out RBI single cut the deficit to 3-2, and base hits by seniors Kieran Geyer and Vincent Terry put runners on the corners with one out in the sixth. Kozak dropped down a bunt to score Geyer with the tying run.

Usowski led off the eighth with a single, but Ursinus was unable to do anything with it, and Franklin & Marshall finally broke through against Radwanski in the ninth. Back-to-back singles started the rally before Blugis attempted a sacrifice bunt. Radwanski fielded and fired wide of the bag at third, allowing the go-ahead run to come home. The Bears turned a wild double play with the infield in, but Casey Bulik delivered a two-out double to score Blugis with an insurance run.

Mike Androconis came on for the save, striking out the side around a two-out single by senior Alex Campbell.

Mumme's two doubles give him nine on the season in just 31 at-bats.

Sophomore David Drea allowed three runs – two earned – in 4.1 innings of work, while Radwanski (1-2) took the hard-luck loss despite striking out five and conceding only three hits in 4.2 frames.

Blugis (1-0) got the win with a scoreless eighth, and Androconis earned his first save.

The Bears host Penn State Berks on Thursday before heading to Lancaster to finish their series with the Diplomats on Friday.
